We
keep everything, but a small shovel and bow saw in an inexpensive
surplus ammo box. We carry two 30' foot recovery straps, an extra
shackle, work gloves, limb risers, a small hatchet, a hammer, First
Aid kit, 20'' feet of rope, a quart of motor oil, a couple of road
flares, a tire inflation kit and a set of spare fuses. The recovery
straps are used to tow a vehicle or pull a vehicle out of road side
trouble. We have traveled several thousands of miles on dirt roads,

have used them a few times. On the other hand,
we have used the limb
risers on many occasions. Especially on narrow overgrown trails
in the Sierras. They lift overhanging branches up and out of the
way of our windshield. The bow saw has proved to be extremely useful
clearing branches on overgrown trails. One of the most important
aspects of vehicle recovery is knowing how to use the equipment.
There are books, DVDs, tutorials on the Internet and classes you
can attend to learn safe and effective vehicle recovery.
